My grandmother lived for 78 years in Delta Road, off Boundary Road. We used to go over to Spanton’s, where the canal is. There used to be a big wood factory there and the barges used to come up the canal to collect the wood. I went over there playing one Saturday and I was three and I had wellingtons on because the grass was wet and we went round the back of Spanton’s, right along by the canal bank and I fell in. I can remember going under the water and seeing all the reeds. There was a boy called Lenny Parker lived next door to my grandmother and he and his brother were there with us. He pulled me up by my hair, took me home and my grandma gave me a walloping that I'll never forget. I never went near the canal again. Not that part anyway.
